What is a meal replacement diet?

Meal replacements are prepackaged breakfast cereals, bars, shakes, frozen entrées, or protein drinks.

These products are intended to be consumed in place of one or more meals each day, which in turn should aid with weight-loss according to research posted by the International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders.

Typically, these foods, shakes and snacks are supposed to contain the vitamins, minerals and nutrients needed for overall health and wellness. However, they are generally low in fat and calories in order to help you shed weight.

Depending on the meal replacement products you choose, these foods and drinks can be used for a number of weeks or for the long term to help with weight maintenance. The primary purpose is to reduce your overall calorie intake in order to promote weight loss.

A number of clinical studies published by the International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders, Nutrition Journal, and Pubmed have demonstrated that meal replacement products can help with weight-loss.

According to the International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders, consumption of 1-2 meal replacements (800-1,600 calories per day) can yield substantial weight-loss results and improve overall health.

Who is behind Ka’chava

Ka’Chava was founded in 2014 by Simon Malone. Malone realized how much he wished for a whole-body meal that would provide him with essential nutrients out of the box while he was traveling in Thailand.

Simone Malone

During this time, Malone came up with Ka’chava after failing to find an all-in-one supplement that benefitted the entire body.

Ka’Chava is a brand that’s not only focused on boosting people’s nutrition, but it’s also committed to helping the environment. Impressively, the brand is partnered with The Rainforest Trust and has saved over 25,126 acres of rainforest since 2017.

Ka’Chava Ingredients

Ka’chava is a protein and meal replacement powder with a good balance of macronutrients to optimize for fullness and muscle-building, all the essential vitamins and minerals you’d expect, whole-food antioxidants, and even pre- and probiotics for gut health.

Plant-Based Protein Blend

Protein is an essential macronutrient crucial for repairing and building muscle as well as building hormones and enzymes. Protein is also the most filling macronutrient and stimulates hormones that make us feel more satiated, which is why weight loss diets are usually high in protein.

The protein blend contains:

Organic sacha inchi protein

Sacha inchi scientifically known as plukenetia volubilis is a star-shaped fruit. It is also known as the Inca peanut and is actually a seed, which grows within the star-shaped fruit pod. It has more protein, omega oils, and iron than many nuts and seeds. Some of its health benefits include; Bolsters Immune System, Combats Inflammation, Boosts Brain Function, Improves Heart Health, Supports Digestive Health, Regulates Biological Processes, Promotes Healthy Weight, Enhances Mood, Satisfies Hunger and Builds Muscles.

Yellow pea protein

Yellow peas are an excellent source of plant-based protein, healthy carbs, fiber and many important nutrients. According to a July 2017 article in the journal Food Science and Nutrition, yellow split peas are low in the amino acid tryptophan.

Organic whole-grain brown rice protein

Brown rice is a whole grain rice with the inedible outer hull removed. Some of the benefits include Diabetes Management, Aids Digestion, provides Antioxidants, May Help Reduce Obesity and Neuroprotective Effects.

Organic amaranth

Organic Amaranth is an ancient grain, organically grown in Himalayan region of India. It is one of the most nutritious grains, with high amounts of calcium, iron and protein. Along with these, it also contains dietary fibers, vitamins and various other nutrients.

Organic quinoa

Quinoa is high in grams of protein and is gluten-free. It also has substantial amounts of B vitamins, fiber, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, vitamin E, and several antioxidants. Quinoa has been eaten in South America for thousands of years, but it has only recently gained massive popularity. Besides the nutrients mentioned above, it also contains small amounts of omega-3 fatty acids.

Per serving, Ka’chava provides 25 grams of protein from its plant-based protein blend of ingredients.

This combination should ensure you’re getting all nine essential amino acids. However, Ka’chava does not tell us the levels of individual amino acids provided to confirm this.

Omega EFA / Fiber Blend

Omega-3 fats and fiber are essential nutrients crucial for good health. Omega-3 is essential for brain health and heart health. It can also reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. Dietary fiber is critical for gut health since it feeds the gut bacteria and keeps you satisfied for longer, aiding weight loss.

Ka’chava provides six grams of dietary fiber per serving. This mostly comes from their essential fatty acid, or EFA, and fiber blend, including organic pure whole-grain oat, organic acacia gum, chia seed, and flax seed.

Chia seed

Chia seeds are among the most important superfoods as they contain massive amounts of nutrients and very few calories.

The Aztecs and the Mayans knew of this tiny seed’s importance in boosting their energy. “Chia” is the ancient Mayan word for “strength.”

However, they don’t disclose how much omega-3 is provided per serving.

Antioxidant / Super-Fruit Blend

Antioxidants are non-essential nutrients found in plants, often giving plant-based foods their vibrant colors. They help neutralize free radicals that arise from oxidative stress in the body due to exposure to things such as mental stress, toxins, aging, ultraviolet light exposure, and cigarette smoke.

Ka’chava’s antioxidant blend includes organic coconut flower nectar, acai berry, organic maqui berry, camu-camu berry, organic strawberry, organic tart cherry, organic blackberry, organic blueberry, and organic raspberry.

Camu-camu berry

Camu camu, or Myrciaria dubia, is a sour berry, similar to cherry in color. It’s native to the Amazon rainforest.

Camu Camu is not consumed as food due to its sourness in taste. The recent reports have marketed this fruit as a supplement of dietary for curing cancer and diabetes. It possesses an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities.

Acai berry

This Brazilian superfruit has numerous health and wellness benefits.

It is low in sugar content and rich in various essential nutrients such as fatty acids such as palmitic, oleic, and linoleic acids, antioxidants.

Organic coconut flower nectar

Organic coconut nectar is naturally sweet and highly nutritious. It comes from the coconut trees, derived from the liquid sap of the coconut flowers. It is a very low GI (35) liquid sweetener that naturally contains vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other nutrients.

Organic maqui berry

Maqui berry has been deemed a superfruit due to its high content of potent antioxidants. It’s rich in vitamins such as Vitamin E and C, as well as potassium, iron, calcium, and fiber.

It demonstrates many potential benefits, including improved inflammation, “bad” LDL cholesterol levels and blood sugar control. Some research suggests that it may also have anti-aging effects and promote gut and eye health.

However, while evidence suggests that consuming a diet high in antioxidant-rich foods promotes overall health there’s little evidence that supplementing antioxidants has the same health benefits.

Adaptogen Blend

Adaptogenic herbs have a balancing effect on hormones and other chemical messengers in the body, helping you respond to and recover from stress, whether mental, physical, or environmental. Supposedly, they can help alleviate stress by working in two directions, depending on your needs. For example, adaptogens might regulate hormone levels by increasing or decreasing certain chemicals.

Ka’chava’s adaptogen herb blend includes organic maca root, organic shiitake mushroom mycelia, organic maitake mushroom mycelia, organic reishi mushroom mycelia, organic cordyceps mushroom mycelia, and organic ginger root.

Organic maca root

The maca root is a powerful adaptogen that enhances mental focus and memory, increases endurance, and helps to reduce stress. It packs high levels of iron and iodine to promote healthy cells and to help keep your metabolism on track.

Shiitake mushroom

The shiitake is an edible mushroom native to East Asia. Shiitake mushrooms are the second most commonly eaten mushrooms in the world. Lentinan and other chemicals in shiitake mushrooms might stimulate the immune system.

Organic ginger root

Ginger is a powerful root with substantial use in ancient medicinal practices and modern-day therapies for various ailments. Ginger may help relieveTrusted Source nausea and vomiting and aid digestion.

Antioxidants and other nutrients in ginger root may help prevent or treat arthritis, inflammation, and various types of infection. Ginger may also reduce the risk of diabetes, cancer, and other health problems.

Super-Greens / Vegetable Blend

Many of the essential vitamins and minerals in Ka’chava naturally occur from their whole food vegetable ingredients. For instance, dark leafy greens are a good source of iron, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, and carotenoids.

Ka’chava also includes a vegetable blend of organic beet, organic carrot, organic spinach, organic broccoli, organic tomato, organic kale, organic cabbage, organic parsley leaf, organic Brussels sprouts, organic green pepper, organic cucumber, organic celery, organic garlic, organic green onion, organic cauliflower, organic asparagus, and chlorella.

Chlorella

Chlorella is an alga that has gained popularity in recent years. As a supplement, it is known to help get rid of toxins and improve cholesterol levels. The nutrients found in most algae of the Chlorella genus are protein, vitamin B12, iron, vitamin C, antioxidants, omega 3, and fiber. They also contain small amounts of copper, zinc, magnesium, folic acid, calcium, and several B vitamins.

Organic cucumber

Cucumbers are a very good source of the vitamins and minerals. Cucumbers are low in calories and contain a good amount of water and soluble fiber, making them ideal for promoting hydration and aiding in weight loss.

These veggies will also contribute to the dietary fiber content of Ka’chava.

Probiotic / Prebiotic Blend

Many human diseases are linked to an imbalance in the gut microbiome, and studies suggest supplementing probiotics can help counteract some of this imbalance. Ka’chava’s probiotic and prebiotic blend includes inulin fiber and the probiotic species Lactobacillus Rhamnosus and Lactobacillus Acidophilus.

Digestive Enzyme Blend

Digestive enzymes are critical for you to break down the macronutrients in your foods, including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and lactose — a carbohydrate found in milk. Studies show that supplementing digestive enzymes can help improve gut symptoms in cases of digestive enzyme insufficiency such as lactose intolerance or general aging.

To boost the digestion and absorption of the ingredients in Ka’chava, it also includes a digestive enzyme blend of amylase, protease, cellulase, lactase, and lipase. Although Ka’chava is dairy-free, it includes lactase, presumably to aid the digestion of any milk products one might consume with it.

Ka’chava nutritional Facts

Carbohydrates

Based on 240kcal serving:

  • Total Carbs: 24g, 9%
  • Sugars: 6g.
  • Fiber: 9g, 32%

As you can see in the Ka’chava nutrition facts above, Ka’chava shakes are generally low in carbohydrates with only 33% of the energy coming from them (as opposed to the recommended 45-65%).

Most of the carbs are from the organic pure whole grain oat, which is also a rich source of fiber, and organic coconut flower nectar. The latter is a rather unusual choice, and it’s the reason why the shakes have 5g of added sugars.

That said, Kachava’s glycemic index is low, and could be considered a diabetic-friendly shake.

Protein

Per 240kcal serving:

Total Protein: 25g, 50%

Source: Yellow Pea Protein, Organic Whole Grain Brown Rice Protein, Organic Sacha Ichi, Organic Amaranth, Organic Quinoa.

Without a doubt, Ka’chava has one of the weirdest arrangements of protein sources. Despite that, it provides you with 25g of quality protein, all from plant sources.

For instance, quinoa is not a common source of protein but it’s an excellent one. It contains all essential amino acids, plus other minerals and nutrients. Besides, both pea protein and brown rice protein are complementary vegan protein sources.

Fats

Per 240kcal serving:

  • Total Fats: 7g, 9%
  • Saturated Fats: 4.5g, 23%

Regarding the fat content, Ka’chava is generally pretty low. However, it contains surprising amounts of saturated fats, above the dietary recommendations. These come from coconut milk.

On the plus side, Ka’chava does include essential omega-3 fatty acids, although the exact amount is not disclosed. These are very important in particular for brain support.

Overall, a healthy split, although I would’ve liked to see more PUFA and MUFA instead of so many saturated fats.

Potential Health Benefits of Ka’Chava

Ka’chava contains many natural ingredients that may offer health benefits but utilizes proprietary blends. Therefore, the exact amounts of these ingredients aren’t shared on the label. This makes it difficult to know if the ingredients are included in helpful amounts.

However, it does contain high doses of some vitamins and minerals that may be helpful for immune support, energy, digestion, skin health, weight management, muscle growth, and mental health.

Most nutrients in Ka’Chava support more than one claimed benefit, so below is a highlight of just a couple of nutrients that support each key benefit claimed by Ka’Chava.

Boosts Immune Health

There are many nutrients in Ka’Chava that may promote immunity, including zinc and selenium.

Zinc is an essential mineral necessary for the proper function of the immune system. It helps to produce white blood cells and activate T-cells, both of which are important for immunity.

Ka’Chava provides 7.5 milligrams (mg) of zinc per serving, which is 68% of the Daily Value.

Selenium is another essential mineral that is necessary for the proper function of the immune system. Selenium is used by the body to create selenoproteins, which play an important role in immune support.

Ka’Chava is high in selenium, providing 35 mg, which is 64% of the Daily Value.

Increases Energy Levels

Ka’Chava claims their meal replacement shakes can boost energy levels, in part due to added B-complex vitamins and iron.

B-complex vitamins are involved in energy production, carbohydrate metabolism, nerve function, and blood formation. A deficiency in any of these vitamins can lead to decreased energy levels.

However, Ka’Chava contains 50% or more of the Daily Value of all B-complex vitamins. While it won’t meet all of your B-vitamin needs, consuming Ka’Chava along with a healthy diet can ensure that you are getting enough of these key vitamins for energy.

Likewise, iron is an essential mineral that plays many important roles in the body, including helping to produce red blood cells. A lack of iron can lead to decreased energy levels. Iron deficiency is more common in menstruating and pregnant women, and people with digestive disorders.

Fortunately, Ka’Chava is an excellent source of iron, providing 5.4 mg per serving, which is 30% of the Daily Value.

Improves Digestive Health

Some Ka’Chava ingredients may support healthy digestion, including dietary fiber, probiotics, and digestive enzymes.

Dietary fiber helps keep the digestive system healthy by promoting regularity and preventing constipation. It also supports healthy gut bacteria, which play a key role in digestive health.

There are 6 grams of dietary fiber in one serving of Ka’Chava, which is 21% of the Daily Value. While this amount alone isn’t adequate, it can help you meet your fiber goals as part of a healthy diet.

Ka’Chava also contains probiotics or live bacterial strains that may be helpful for digestion. The Lactobacillus strains in Ka’chava have been shown to help improve bloating, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms.

Finally, Ka’Chava also contains a blend of digestive enzymes which help break down food into material your body can use. These may support regular digestion and improve digestive issues. However, the exact amounts of probiotics and digestive enzymes in Ka’Chava aren’t disclosed, so it’s hard to say if the amounts in the product would be helpful.

Supports Healthy Skin

Ka’Chava contains many nutrients that support healthy skin, including vitamins A and C.

Vitamin A and its precursors (carotenoids) may help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It also boosts our skin’s natural defenses against the sun’s harmful UV rays. One serving of Ka’Chava provides 750 mcg, which is 83% of the Daily Value of vitamin A.

Vitamin C is essential for collagen production. Collagen is a protein that helps keep our skin firm and supple. Vitamin C also helps protect our skin from the sun’s UV rays.

Ka’Chava contains 30 mg of vitamin C which is 33% of the Daily Value.

Assists with Weight Management

Ka’Chava may help with weight management, as it is high in fiber and protein.

As previously mentioned, Ka’Chava contains 6 grams of dietary fiber per serving. Fiber helps keep you feeling full after eating, which may cause you to eat fewer calories. In fact, a higher fiber intake has been linked to greater weight loss success.

Additionally, protein helps to stabilize blood sugar levels, which may also help to reduce cravings and overeating. Protein also helps to promote feelings of fullness, so you are likely to eat fewer calories when including protein in your diet.

Moreover, protein plays an important role in maintaining muscle mass, which is critical for keeping metabolism high and preventing weight gain and injury, especially as you age.

Ka’Chava contains 25 grams of protein per serving.

Supports Muscle Growth and Function

Ka’Chava contains nutrients such as protein, iron, and magnesium, which can support your workouts and muscle growth.

The body uses proteins to build and repair tissues, including muscles. Muscles need protein to grow and recover from exercise. Research has shown a general recommendation of 20–25 grams of protein in a meal may support skeletal muscle protein synthesis.

Ka’Chava provides the recommended dosage of 25 grams of protein per serving.

Additionally, minerals such as iron and magnesium are also crucial for muscle growth and recovery.

Iron is necessary for energy production and muscle function, and magnesium supplementation has been shown to improve energy production and exercise performance.

Ka’Chava provides 30% of the Daily Value of iron and 60% of the Daily Value of magnesium per serving.

Aids Mental Health

Ka’Chava contains nutrients that may help to improve mood and support brain health, such as vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids.

Vitamin D is necessary for the development and function of the brain, but deficiency is fairly common. Low blood levels of vitamin D have been associated with mental health disorders such as depression.

Ka’Chava provides 5 mcg of vitamin D, which is 25% of the Daily Value.

Ka’Chava may help reach their daily recommended intake of vitamin D when consumed along with a healthy diet.

Omega-3 supplements have been shown to improve fatty acid levels in the body, which may help maintain and improve brain health. Ka’Chava contains a blend of omega essential fatty acids (EFA) and fiber.

Customer Reviews of Ka’chava

If research agrees that the ingredients in Ka’chava are safe and effective, do consumers also agree to it? Let’s look at some of the Ka’chava reviews.

I am on my third bag of the chocolate flavor. In fact, I like it so much, I subscribed. I am actually quite shocked by the reviews where the reviewer found the chocolate taste so displeasing. Tastes great! Depending on my workout for the day and how much time I’ll have to digest, I’ll either have my shake pre or post-workout. Perfect for washing down my multivitamin & either giving me a little fuel or replenishment. I do not think all Vegan shakes are created equal. I like this one far better than Isagenix. No comparison, really. Yes, pricey. But I guess you get what you pay for.

5-star review

Take a quality multivitamin and eat well and save a bunch of money. If you were to have one serving a day it would cost $150 a month! The vanilla flavor is bland, can’t really taste the vanilla. The drink messes with my digestive tract. The only reason I would consider buying this again is if I went on an extended backcountry trip, and even then a quality multivitamin and jerky would probably be better, definitely cheaper.

3-star review

I drank the chocolate flavor for breakfast every day for two months. During that time I started breaking out in pimple-like hives all over my face, neck, eyes, and ears. After 5 doctor appointments and two months of nonstop hives, I finally found out the shake was causing it. The shake tastes and looks like it has great “clean” ingredients, but there are soooooo many ingredients in it – I can’t even figure out which is causing the allergy. Be careful!

Potential Side Effects

All of the ingredients in Ka’Chava are generally regarded as safe.

Though rare, some ingredients, like probiotics, have been known to cause mild side effects. These can include:

  • abdominal pain
  • gas
  • diarrhea

This meal replacement shake is suitable for vegans and vegetarians. It is plant-based, gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free, and free from artificial sweeteners, flavors, colors, and preservatives.

However, Ka’Chava is not entirely allergen friendly. It contains coconut and is manufactured on equipment that also processes milk, tree nuts, wheat, soy, and other allergens.

Does Ka’Chava Help with Weight Loss?

Ka’Chava is said to have many health benefits and is meant to serve as a vegan meal replacement powder to boost your digestion and help you lose weight. In short, this shake can help you lose weight, especially when used as a meal replacement.

It is low in calories but quite filling, cutting down on your daily caloric intake while still providing your body with all of the nutrients that it needs.

However, we should mention that the Ka’Chava plant-based protein blend is not designed specifically for weight loss, and, as such, you should go into the Ka’Chava program with realistic expectations.

With that being said, we can’t fault the brand for including essential nutrients like pea protein and probiotics, into this meal replacement powder, as these ingredients help with gut health.

Cost and Where to Buy

Ka’Chava can only be purchased from the brand’s website.

  • One-Time Purchase, 15-Serving Bag: $69.95 ($4.66/serving)
  • Monthly Subscribers, 15-Serving Bag: $59.95 ($3.99/serving)

Ka’Chava Alternatives

There are several vegan and vegetarian meal replacement shakes on the market today. Here’s how Ka’Chava stacks up against some similar alternatives.

Orgain Organic Meal On-The-Go Powder

Orgain Organic Meal Powder is one comparable alternative. Like Ka’Chava, it’s entirely plant-based and contains a variety of whole food ingredients.

Orgain is also certified organic but provides less fiber per serving than Ka’Chava.

On the Orgain website, it can be purchased for $41.99 for 16 servings, or $31.49 (25% off) with a subscription. After your first subscription order, refills will cost $37.79. You can also purchase it on Amazon.

Orgain offers free shipping on subscription orders and orders over $65. Shipping is $5 for all other orders. If you order on their website, they offer a 30-day money-back guarantee and pay for return shipping.

Organic may be a good fit for you if you prefer a product that is certified organic, or if you are looking for a meal replacement that is less expensive than Ka’Chava.

Huel Powder

Huel is a vegan, non-GMO meal replacement powder. Unlike Ka’Chava, it contains some artificial sweeteners.

However, it provides 400 calories per serving compared to Ka’Chava’s 250, so it provides a more substantial meal. These extra calories mostly come from carbohydrates and fat, although it does contain a bit more protein than Ka’Chava too.

Huel also comes in 10 different flavors.

Huel costs $46.11 for a 17-serving bag, but you must purchase two bags if you order through their website. Subscribers can get 10% off, and shipping is free for all orders. You can also purchase it on Amazon.

Huel does not accept returns or offer refunds for items that have been opened.

This product may be a better fit for you if you prefer having a variety of flavor options available. It’s also less expensive than Ka’Chava, so it may be a better buy if you don’t mind artificial sweeteners or non-organic ingredients.
